North Callaway Volunteer Fire Department to Hire Part-Time Firefighters
Kingdom City, MO — 8/13/2025 — The North Callaway Fire Protection District's Board of Directors at last nights board meeting (8/12/2025) approved the addition of part-time firefighters to be stationed at Fire Station 1, marking a significant step forward in enhancing fire protection and emergency response for the community.
This decision will provide the department with increased staffing during key hours, ensuring faster response times to emergencies, improved coverage for neighboring districts, and enhanced safety for both residents and department volunteers. By supplementing our volunteer force with part-time personnel, the department can better meet the growing demands of emergency services while continuing to deliver the high standard of care the community has come to expect.
“We are proud to take this important step toward strengthening our ability to respond when our community needs us most,” said Matt Walton, Fire Chief of the North Callaway Fire Department. “Having part-time firefighters will give us the flexibility and readiness to handle emergencies more efficiently while supporting our dedicated volunteers.”
The department has already received applications for these positions, and selected candidates will begin their duties in the coming weeks. Their presence will allow for greater availability of trained responders, reduced reliance on mutual aid during peak times, and quicker service to residents in urgent situations.
The North Callaway Volunteer Fire Department remains committed as our mission statement says "To Serve our community & all those who pass through it. By providing responsive, effective & volunteer based emergency services through preparedness, prevention, & mutual aid with the goal of safeguarding lives, property & community." This staffing enhancement is a direct investment in the safety and well-being of the North Callaway area.

North Callaway County Fire Protection District – Public Statement
We value our community's trust and believe open, respectful communication is essential to our success. In light of recent discussions, we want to share clear, accurate information ahead of our upcoming board meeting this Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Kingdom City Fire Station.
Leadership Update
Earlier this year, a change in leadership occurred in the fire chief position following official board action. Personnel matters are closed records under Missouri law and cannot be discussed publicly. We thank our former fire chief for her dedicated service to our community.
Our current fire chief, Matt Walton, has worked tirelessly to strengthen the department, recruit new volunteers, and expand coverage. We currently have 19 active responders, with more applications set for review at Tuesday's meeting. His focus on building a reliable, well-trained team positively impacts the district.
Response Capability
While some former members chose to leave the department, our ability to respond to calls remains strong. Mutual aid has always been a vital part of fire service operations, and we are now considering a significant step forward, hiring paid daytime firefighters. This investment will provide more dependable daytime response for our community and enhance support for our partner departments.
Meetings, Transparency, and Board Responsibility
We hold open board meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Kingdom City Fire Station, and we encourage everyone to attend.
Our board members are elected volunteers who serve without pay. Closed meetings, as allowed under Missouri law, are reserved for specific purposes such as personnel, legal matters, and contract negotiations. These meetings are always posted in compliance with the law, and their minutes are available upon request under the Missouri Sunshine Law. Any cancellations have only occurred due to a lack of quorum.
It is important to note that the board's responsibility is to make decisions for the long-term betterment of the fire district and the safety of its citizens. These decisions are made only after carefully considering all available facts and available input, with the safety and well-being of the community as the highest priority. While some decisions may not be popular, they are made in good faith and the best interest of the district as a whole.
Moving Forward — Together
Our fire district exists to protect lives and property, but we cannot do it alone. Positive interaction between the district and our residents makes us stronger, safer, and better prepared for emergencies. We ask for your continued partnership, whether through volunteering, attending meetings, sharing accurate information, or simply encouraging our firefighters in their service.
This Tuesday's meeting is an opportunity for us to move forward together, united by a shared commitment to the safety and well-being of North Callaway County. Let us continue building a future we can all be proud of.
